Search engine optimisation — SEO — is the process of improving your website so it appears higher in unpaid (organic) search results. When someone types "best accounting software for startups" or "brand agency in Mumbai" into Google, SEO is what determines which websites appear on page one and which are invisible.

How search engines decide who ranks

Search engines like Google use hundreds of signals to decide which pages to show for a given query. The most important ones fall into three categories:

  • Relevance — does your page actually answer what the user was looking for?
  • Authority — do other credible websites link to yours? (These are called backlinks.)
  • Experience — is your site fast, mobile-friendly, and easy to use?

All three need to be strong for sustained rankings. Excellent content on a slow, poorly structured site will not rank well. A technically perfect site with thin content will not either.

The three pillars of SEO

Technical SEO

This is the foundation. Google needs to be able to find, crawl, and understand your pages. Key technical factors include: site speed, mobile responsiveness, HTTPS, clean URL structure, sitemap, and structured data markup.

On-page SEO

This covers everything on the page itself — your title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, keyword usage, internal links, and content quality. On-page SEO is the most directly controllable factor.

Off-page SEO (link building)

Backlinks — other sites linking to yours — are still one of Google's strongest ranking signals. Earning links from credible, relevant sources (industry publications, partner websites, news coverage) signals to Google that your content is trustworthy.

How long does SEO take?

The honest answer: 3 to 6 months to see meaningful movement, 6 to 12 months to see real results, 12 to 24 months to build a durable competitive position. This timeline depends on:

  • How much competition exists for your target keywords
  • The current state of your site (a new domain starts with zero authority)
  • How consistently you publish quality content
  • How aggressively you build backlinks
SEO is a compounding investment. The first 6 months feel slow. The 18-month mark is where businesses that stayed consistent start to see outsized returns on every rupee spent.

SEO vs paid search — which should you do first?

Paid search (Google Ads) gives you immediate visibility while SEO builds. For most businesses, the right answer is both — paid search generates results now while SEO builds a lower-cost, durable traffic channel over time. Once SEO starts producing results, you can reduce paid spend on those keywords.

Where to start with SEO in India

  1. Fix the technical basics first. Run a speed test (Google PageSpeed Insights), check your site is mobile-friendly, ensure HTTPS is active.
  2. Do keyword research. Use tools like Google Search Console, Semrush, or Ahrefs to find queries your audience is actually searching for.
  3. Create content that actually answers those queries. Long, specific, genuinely useful content outperforms thin content every time.
  4. Build internal links. Link related pages to each other so Google understands your content structure.
  5. Earn backlinks through PR and partnerships. Get featured in industry publications, directories, and news outlets.
